Nzema History Remembered; Achievements Of Some Great Nzema Personalities

Nzemas carry a unique heritage.  They produce not only the greatest pearls century after century but also, the visions and civic mindedness of some of the tribe men led to the entire liberation of the continent of Africa.

In 1734 academic year, the chancery of the famous University of Wittenberg in Germany proclaimed to the world that it had produced “the first black graduate”, but with 2 PhD’s. That man was Dr. Amo, an Nzema.  Amo also became the first black man to study law and medicine.





In 1857, a young chief warned all of the coastal chiefs about the gravity of settler activity regarding slavery. He independently galvanized the local chiefs to end slavery.  He was captured by the British, killed and buried in Cape Coast. That man was King Kaku-Aka, an Nzema.




George Alfred Grant, popularly known as Paa Grant, was a merchant and politician in the Gold Coast who has been called "the father of Gold Coast politics". As a political activist, he was a founder and the first president of the United Gold Coast Convention in 1947.

In 1957, the British declared with unconditional terms, the declaration of Ghana’s independence.  This was borne of the sweat and iron of yet another man who led us through that.  That man was Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, an Nzema.





Robert Samuel Blay was a Ghanaian barrister and jurist. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana during the first republic. He is often referred to as the first Nzema lawyer. He was president of the Ghana Bar Association on two occasions and also a member of the first board of directors of the Bank of Ghana.

In 2005, the Indigo magazine listed Professor Samuel Akainyah amongst the 50 most influential people in the city of Chicago. That list included Chicago heavyweights like Oprah Winfrey, Obama, Mohammed Ali, Farakhan, Michael Jordan and R.Kelly.
